CLASS ONE What is Astrology? This segment will be a definition of the study of Astrology. It will discuss the influence of modern astrology on the masses as well as some of the history behind older forms of astrology. Is Astrology a superstition? Does it have any validity? What is the purpose for using astrology and what are its effects. We will touch on the influence of the Moon and how it affects the tides as well as the emotions of people. We will touch on the differences between Mundane astrology, Natal astrology and Horary astrology. Our focus in the Holm Astrology Level One Course will be Natal astrology (the study of personal horoscopes). What is a horoscope? In this segment we will define how a horoscope is calculated. We will also touch briefly on the different types of astrology charts (solar charts, natal charts, progressed chart and composite charts); We will follow up with questions. The wheel and how it is formulated (house systems) In this section we will discuss the circular chart. How it is formulated (Ascendant positioning and Midheaven positioning)? We will touch on houses and what they mean (each house will be discussed in depth in class four). We will also touch on different house systems and finding one that suits you. We will also discuss how the midheaven and ascendant will be found in each house system. Questions. The planets and signs and their symbols We will be discussing the Planets and their symbols (the planets will be discussed in detail in class three). It is important to be able to identify the planets by their symbols as this is a quick reference which is used by most Astrology sites. Questions. CLASS TWO The Signs and Rulers (including dual rulership) In this segment we will discuss each sign and its characteristics in detail. We will also discuss the planets that ruler each sign as well as dual rulership, as some of the signs are co-ruled by another planet. At the end of this segment we will answer any questions regarding signs and rulers. Elements and qualities In this segment, we will speak about the elements (fire, earth, air and water) and the signs that are ruled by each element. We then will discuss the qualities (cardinal, fixed and mutable) which signs they rule and which houses are ruled by these qualities. At the end of this segment we will answer any questions. CLASS THREE The Planets In our third class, we will be discussing the planets in detail and how they affect the horoscope. Each planet has a specific energy and depending on which houses they are found in (houses will be discussed in class five) and sign position, they can affect our lives in very profound ways. We will also highlight the planets by their signs. This will be follows by a short question period. CLASS FOUR Working with Sign and Planet In our fourth class we will put into practice the planetary energies within the signs. Each planet encompasses a specific energy and depending on the sign it is in will define how these energies are released. The outer planets (Uranus, Neptune and Pluto) are generational planets and they work in similar ways for all those born within that sign. However the house positions of these planets (discussed in detail in class five) speak in terms of the areas of life which are affected not only by the energy of the planet but also the sign each planet is in. This is what makes each chart different even for those that are born in the same sign position of these planets. There are twelve signs (discussed in class two) and there are eleven planets (discussed in class three) to define each one would take far too long. We will discuss a few to give you an idea of how this works. You will also note when deciphering the charts (that we will be passing around in class) that there is also the Moon’s nodes (North and South Nodes), Chiron, the Part of Fortune and the Vertex. These particulars do not fit into the realms of our level one course, but will be defined in our future classes, when available. Astrology is a vast subject and to go through its entirety takes several years of study and is actually never ending. For those that have a keen interest in the actual art of predictive astrology it will be covered in Level II. Before anyone is ready to move deeper into astrology we have to understand the basics and how to put them to work in the natal chart. CLASS FIVE The Houses In our fifth class, we will look in depth at the meanings associated with each of the 12 houses. Houses are very significant and speak in terms of areas of life involvement. Planets, houses and aspects (class 7) are the key ingredients that translate the natal chart. Dual Signs Houses We will touch on dual signs within houses as a house can have two signs within its borders. House division by element Each house has an element that it is ruled by. We will touch on this. House division by quality Each house has a division by quality and we will discuss this section as well. Questions to follow CLASS SIX Working with Signs, Planets and Houses In class five we discussed each house in detail which again related to areas of life. They are also defined by element (earth, air, fire and water) and also quality (cardinal, fixed and mutable). During this class we will now put our houses together with our planetary placements and the signs they are located in. When we understand the Planets, their signs and also the houses that they are in, we can get a clear understanding of how they work within the natal chart. There is one more area that we will discuss in class seven which deals with aspects. This brings together the working measurements along with the planetary sign and house positions, helping us to understand the energy between two planets and angles of the chart. This may all sound rather complex, but as you learn to work with the tools of astrology it becomes second nature and the definitions become clear. It does take time to put it all together, but it becomes increasingly amazing to see how a simple chart defines personal characteristics and the life plan in detail. Astrology is an amazing means to discover how the universe works within each of us and how the detailed individual parts all comes to life as we decipher each distinctive chart. CLASS SEVEN Table of aspects There are two types of aspects, major aspects and minor aspects. We will discuss what these aspects are. We will be discussing the angles between planets by degree, (this defines aspects) and the orbs of influence and how that intensifies planetary links or mitigates their influence. Understanding the general meanings of aspects We will also discuss the meanings of all the aspects not from planet to planet, as this would be impossible to cover. We will define what each aspect means. This will be followed by a question period. CLASS EIGHT Delineating a chart There are multiple aspects and planetary links within a chart. We will be defining the most significant means to take when deciphering a chart. We will talk about the most compelling aspects and chart definitions that should first be allocated and defined. After this segment we will have a discussion answering any questions that need to be addressed. Exam You will be provided with an exam to take home. The exam will be a chart of an unnamed person which you will have to delineate base on what you have learned over the course. CLASS NINE Exam Review The exam chart will be reviewed in class in its entirety as a group discussion. The exams will be collected after the class so that I can do a comprehensive review and provide comments for your added understanding. You will be provided with your reviewed exam and your certificate, if you have completed the course. • Pluto Aspects | holmastrology.com

Information on energies related to Aspects to Pluto Transiting Pluto’s abilities to transform and regenerate are highlighted when it is traveling through the birth chart. There is nothing subtle about Pluto’s influence and you will be quite aware that something needs to be changed or altering when it makes contact. Pluto’s energies are abrupt and disruptive in their actions and the changes that Pluto is putting on the table need to be reworked and transformed so they fit life better. When Pluto is finished transiting through a house or linking up with a planetary placement, its energies will have significantly changed things and usually in a very permanent manner. Pluto is associated with actual death and is usually present in some way when someone passes over. It does not always mean literal death, but it does mean that a condition or life element is no longer suitable and change is needed. Therefore it does signify the death or end of a situation and then the beginning of something new. Pluto, as mentioned, is not subtle in its release and sometimes you have opportunities to make these changes, and other times they just happen with you having little or no control over the situation. If Pluto links up with Mars or Uranus, care is required and focus on not putting yourself into danger's way is important. If there is a square between these planets, there are challenging conditions due to the contact, and they come at you for a reason. Watch for arguments and aggressive behavior especially if Mars is concerned and particularly if the aspect is an opposition. The trine and sextile aspects are not as aggressive and usually suggest transformation at a high level and although somewhat challenging to accept, these transformations will benefit you in the long haul. Uranus is more unpredictable and this is the one you need to watch, if, for example, you are driving a motorized vehicle. Operate with more care than normal and never rush. Do not rush out to drive in fits of anger or after an argument. Take the time to settle yourself down. If you are confronted by an aggressive individual, do not put up a fight unless you have little choice. It is best to walk away whenever possible under this influence. These, of course, are extreme cases and normally, there have to be other aspects suggesting much of the same before these energies are released in a powerful way. There needs to be at least 3 aspects in a chart all saying the same thing before things necessarily happen and much depends on the other planets involved and the angles they are making. However, it can be a rather tumultuous experience and you will learn a lot from it. It seems to be human nature that we learn much more from adverse life conditions than the mild and mellow experiences. We may have to spend a little time meditating on how the energies can be released in a more gentle and positive manner. With this in mind, we will provide some details for each aspect and planet. • Mars' Return

Be prepared for action with the Mars return. MARS' RETURN The Mars return to its original placement in the natal chart by sign and degree takes place approximately every two years. Mars in many cases is considered malefic in its expression and often denotes aggressive action and conflicts which on some level require strength and determination. Before we go into the return and its implications and consequences, we have to look at Mars’ placement within the natal chart. Is it well aspected especially by trine or sextile with the Sun, Venus or Jupiter? Is it poorly aspected especially by square or opposition and in some cases conjunct with Saturn, Uranus or Pluto? This will help define what we are working with when determining the influence related to Mars in this return cycle. Because of Mars’ reputation of being a malefic energy, some Astrologers link its place in the natal chart as an area of conflict, but the resolution often can be obtained by facing things head on and believing that inner strength is part of our personal abilities. Mars is certainly in need of steadiness and control as well as direction and has been linked with accidents and struggle often requiring instruction. Many believe that Mars and its energies are something we need to worry about, but once again, we will need to look at the natal chart placement as well as other transiting and progressed factors present at that particular time to have a clear understanding of the energies at hand. Mars is also a timing tool and can be used when analyzing as something might occur and along with the Sun, Uranus and the progressed Moon, we will find that Mars can be quite accurate in determining when the energies are about to be released. Those that are in sync with Mars (Aries rising or Sun in Aries or a strong Mars placement) will find that the energies are more comfortable and easier to work with than for those that are not fortunate enough to have this present in their natal charts. However, it is always wise to set plans before jumping into action as this is when accidents take place or activities turn out less favourable than what we might have wished for. As with all return cycles it is a time for new beginning, setting new goals and plans of action. Mars’ return can help with defining when it is best to move ahead or stay put in our plan of action. In a masculine’s chart, it speaks of male energies and the aggressive instinct depending on what sign and house Mars is found. In a more feminine chart, it often speaks of the masculine spouse or someone who could be considered enthusiastic or aggressive or a prominent masculine figure In both gender charts, it can speak of a young masculine individual; as with Venus, in both charts often speaks of a young feminine individual. In both charts, Mars speaks of the sexual drive and ambitious, enterprising efforts made by individuals. When we are going to experience the Mars return be prepared for action. Sometimes we will need to anticipate activity, and other times, life just pushes us in a direction that often requires action, drive and a personal initiative. • The Eighth House

The Eighth House The eighth house is rather a mysterious house, although not quite as mysterious as the twelfth house . It is considered an occult house and many undertones related to the mystic have their origins in this house. The occult is closely linked to this house, as it is naturally ruled by Scorpio , which has its routes buried in the psychic underground This house is ruled by the planet Pluto . Pluto regenerates and causes one to delve deep into one’s own psyche and discover the undercurrents that push and pull us to where we are meant to go throughout our lives. Pluto is all about transformations, and life and death issues which is closely linked to the eighth house. Death and rebirth can be brought forward on many levels. This house deeply relates to death and rebirth. By the time a transiting planet passes through this house, we will have undergone a transformation which will focus on the energies of the planet transiting this house. If there are planets located within this house, such as the Sun, we will experience great changes to our core personality, especially if Uranus or Pluto are the planets transiting our Sun in this house. This house offers support and an interest to uncover our most inner characteristics which are found deep inside that places that we may not venture often. When an outer planet is transiting through this house, we may be forced to dig up issues that have been locked up in our subconscious for years. The support that this house speaks about occurs when we confront these so called demons that have been dormant for years and face them head-on to transform them into something that can assist us in our overall growth This is also the house of legacies, wills, inheritance, alimony and taxes. Depending on what needs to surface while a transforming planet such as Pluto passes through this area of our chart, these areas will be brought to the surface. Other people’s money is governed by this house as well as joint finances. Often these types of issues are resolved by the time a transiting planet passes through this house if there is a connection to these matters. This is the house of the unspoken word, and often there are other powers related to spiritual connections associated to this house. People with many planets in this house natally often have a marked increase in psychic experiences and especially when linked to any signs that are in the element of water. This is a powerful house and often the necessary changes that need to take place in a person’s life unravel during times when planets are transiting through this house. It usually takes a little time to uncover all the transformations that have taken place, as much lies beneath the surface and you will have to uncover the hidden messages that may be revealed during transits through the eighth house. Sex is also under the domain of this house and much can be uncovered by the study of this house to ascertain the sexual undercurrents in a person’s life. The sign on the cusp will help to uncover much of these sexual undertones of the individual and how they respond to sexual "content" entering their lives. • Ascendant or-rising-sign | holmastrology.com

ASCENDANT OR RISING SIGN The Ascendant Sign or Rising Sign is descriptive of our outside personality, the one we reveal to the world. This will usually differ from our Sun Sign and this is a sure reason why some individuals are seen as quite different from the typical characteristics associated with their Sun Sign personality. The Sun Sign still resonates and is usually more prominent as we get to know and fulfill the characteristics of our true selves. The Sun Sign is you’re inside personality while the Ascendant sign reveals an outer personality that we are willing to reveal to the world. The Ascendant Sign often depicts our appearance and the way we carry ourselves in our outside environment. It is believed at least by this Astrologer that we are meant to merge our Sun Sign with our Rising Sign as well as the sign and house placement of the Moon as we develop and mature. It is with this merging that we can distinguish our true more complete selves and we can represent our true selves in a more authentic manner. The Ascendant sign is also a very significant point when transits and progressions move across or make important aspects to it. The changes and transformations that are often accompanied through the transit connections to this point are very significant to our overall development. Changes in our appearance, our evolution, our ideologies and life concepts as well as changes to relationships with important people all come under careful scrutiny during these transiting times. For example, Uranus crossing over the Ascendant often correlates with major wants for something new and exciting in life. We are often viewed from the outside world as being rather eccentric in our behaviour during powerful transits or progressions affecting this area of our chart. The want to break free from restrictive or old outdated ways or relationships that fall into this category are often by-products of a Uranus transit especially when in Conjunction, Square or Opposition. Uranus is also known as the awakener and many will go through an awakening process as Uranus transits this placement. It is important to also look at the opposing house cusp (7th) and the ruling planet and house placement of your ascendant sign to gain further insight into potential changes taking place in your life. The aspect that the planet is making will define whether it is stressful or an opportunity or just plain easy flow, while the planet will define the type of action that can be anticipated. The house placement of the Ascendant’s ruling planet will also define the area of life that will be affected. Any outer planet that transits this placement will have significant influence on your life. It often takes several years for these slow moving bodies to move out of the orb of influence. Those that are sensitive can feel the approach of the planet by as much as 4-5 degrees and the separation of the link by up to 2-3 degree. The affects will be felt for a long period of time and will change life’s conditions significantly. Often these outer planets signify a complete change in your life’s course and a new beginning. Have a close look at any outer planet making a conjunction in particular, as this is the most powerful of the major aspects. The planet and the sign on the Ascendant will merge and act as an intensifying agent of the conditions already in place in the birth chart. Be ready for change, transformation and a new beginning as these powerful entities begin taking hold in your life. • Venus' return | holmastrology.com

VENUS' RETURN A Venus return chart that closely matches the natal chart by sign and degree signifies an important year. Venus’ cycle is approximately one year, a little over or under by roughly one month depending on the year. The house position and aspects and especially contacts with the angles define what type of return can be anticipated. When deciphering a Venus return remember to take into consideration that this is a chart which has to do with Venetian matters. These matters will have an influence on love and affection and often speaks of a love interest. Sometimes it speaks of the daughter or a young important female and in some cases on a wider scale is representative of women in general. Venus also has to do with social activities such as marriage and social events such as parties and engagements of importance. Venus also has to do with popularity and material objects such as gifts and acquisitions often referred to as elegant or pleasing to the eye. The house Venus is located in within the Venus return will be an area of interest and much can be said with regards to what this period will be about by its house position. The Ascendant and the placement of its ruler also help uncover the potential that lies within this Venus return chart. The aspects which Venus receives from other planets in this chart define how positive or challenging this period might be. However, it should be noted that Venus in many cases helps to alleviate some conditions especially when linked favourably to the Sun, Jupiter and the Ascendant. Challenging aspects to Venus in the return can affect love connections and also finances but favourable aspects will also affect these areas in a complimentary and positive manner. Remember all challenges found in any chart are put in place to be resolved and they are the ones that hold the greatest lessons which propel us forward in life. All returns are indicative of the beginning of a new cycle and are defined by what the return planet ( Venus in this case) is about. • Sun in Capricorn

Sun in Capricorn Capricorn Those with a strong emphasis in the sign of Capricorn have a difficult time revealing their emotions. This is not to say that their emotional makeup is less than any other sign, only that much of what they feel remains contained within and is only released when and if it feels appropriate to do so. This does not happen frequently. Their emotions run deep and they feel things on an intense level, but to those around them, they appear to have their emotions in check and offer little of their emotions externally to others. They are contained and reserved with their emotional expression and prefer it this way, probably due to the intensity of their emotions. Most Capricorn individuals are professional in their outward expression. They appear to have their proverbial heads on straight and can generally be relied on to present themselves to the outside world as informed and knowledgeable, particularly in their chosen fields. Many have strong drive when it comes to achieving their objectives and are willing to work hard to move up the corporate ladder. They instinctively understand that everything takes time, due to the influence of their planetary ruler, Saturn . They realize that by using an approach that could be defined as one step at a time, they will gradually make their way in life. They also understand that this approach leads to less mistakes and they will not miss any steps along the way. Being well informed and not just appearing to have the know how is very important to them. They want to be relied on to make the proper decisions based on experience and knowledge. When it comes to love, the seventh house should be taken into account as this describes the potential significant other that they would be attracted to; however, in general these people are looking for a knowledgeable individual, one who can be relied on and is consistent. They will not do well within a flighty partnership as there is a need for stability as well as commitment within the framework of a structured marriage. If they find someone with these criteria and also has a great sense of humour, which will inadvertently help them relax a little and enjoy life, they would feel as though they have attracted the perfect partner. There are often deeply ingrained spiritual or religious ingredients in their personality. They are religious in their own sense although this does not indicate that they will be attracted to traditional religion although this is possible, because of the nature of Saturn. Tradition is important as it has been tried, tested and holds some truth to it. They will not just follow along blindly within cults or religious organizations as they have to understand the religion’s concepts and be comfortable with its teachings. As a friend, Capricorn individuals are very reliable and usually true to their word. They rarely miss appointments and are on time and constant. If they say we will meet at such and such a time, they will be there probably even a little early. If you are late or are a no-show, it will not sit well with them. These characteristics will be interlinked with the many other attributes found within the birth chart, but in general, the above characteristics describes the inner personality of most Capricorn individuals. Libra With this placement strong in your Chart, life is a balancing act. People with this Sun sign always need to find balance in life and particularly within their important relationships. Because of this need for balance and harmony in their life, some of these individuals are often said to change direction in mid-stream, just to avoid confrontation. They have an uncanny ability to see both sides of almost any situation and are great at the art of compromise in order to keep things at peace. They sway from side to side making alterations to keep everyone happy although they are very open to dialogue within their personal relationships and are not afraid to rock the boat when necessary. Justice is their prime concern and they carefully analyse situations to decide what the best route to take is. This makes them comfortable in making decisions on behalf of those around them that require guidance. They see something positive in most circumstances. These individuals make great mediators. In partnership, and as mentioned this is a primary focus of their life, they strive for peace and harmony but often have trouble taking responsibility for their actions. They would rather push the blame on others to avoid taking responsibility for a condition gone astray. Libra people are very social and eager to cooperate for the general good of others. This makes them very approachable and they are usually well liked. Seeking the middle ground is their prime objective and if the truth is unpleasant, they will find a little white lie to absorb the blunt of what the truth might represent. In their mind, these little white lies can protect others as well as themselves and it is okay to use this tactic to save face or hurt. Because of this need for balance and harmony at almost any cost, some Libra individuals have difficulties making a stand. They are often found sitting on the fence and to some of the more assertive signs in the Zodiac, this character trait is viewed as somewhat weak. Libra individuals are always looking for the right way to express life or the best way to deal with life when problems could arise. Harmony is the ultimate condition that they seek and although many have high expectations in life, they are quite willing to let things slide in order to maintain that middle ground that is so appealing to them. It is no wonder that their symbol is the scales of justice. Their goal is to bringing equality to all and fairness into all situations, without pondering too heavily on what these inherent traits represent to the world at large. Balance, harmony and peace are the hallmarks of this justice oriented sign and peace at any cost would be their mantra. Astrology 101 Libra is ruled by Venus and the seventh house. • Saturn

Saturn Saturn is the ruling planet of Capricorn and of the tenth house . Saturn is known as the task maker and challenges you in your life, to uphold written laws, to move forward in your quest for achievement and provides you with the stamina and perseverance to stay on course. Saturn is known as the task maker because of its relentless pursuit in objectifying and setting standards in order for you to achieve your goals in life. Saturn makes you work for your rewards and only through a steady approach and applied pressure does Saturn’s rewards pay off. Saturn moves around the zodiac every 28 to 30 years and these period’s, ages 29, 58 and 87 are turning points in our lives. The first Saturn return, which occurs around the age 29, is extremely relevant to our lives and (depending which house Saturn is located in your birth chart) during this time many of us experience period significant to our relationship. Some will go through transformations within the home front ( fourth house ), some will experience relationship changes ( seventh house ) while others go through a transformation in their working environment and occupation ( tenth house ). The changed experiences will be reflected by the house. The placement of Saturn in your birth chart represents an area of life that will require your attention and usually unless Saturn is accentuated with mostly positive aspects, will produce stumbling blocks and stress in overcoming obstacles in life. As stated, Saturn is the task maker, but it is also the disciplinarian, the teacher and the one that provides you with rewards for all your hard work, or provides you with challenges and obstacles to overcome when you try to ignore its influence in your life. Astrology 101 Saturn is planet of Karma and restrictions and delays. It is the teacher and the task maker. Saturn rules Capricorn. It is associates with the Tenth House. Some Astrologers say it co-rules Aquarius but again this is questionable. The Sun The Moon Mercury Venus Mars Jupiter Uranus Neptune Pluto
