Jupiter Retrograde When Jupiter goes into its retrograde, this cycle lasts about 120 days and will move between 10 to 20 degrees. Jupiter goes retrograde every year and as retrogrades usually indicate that the energy is not strong or its full expression is restricted, Jupiter in retrograde still offers up opportunities for expansion and optimism, although somewhat challenged when it is in touch with Saturn. You can use an orb of 3-4 degrees when determining if Jupiter will affect any of the planets or important points in your natal chart. As it crosses these placements, the energy of Jupiter will increase. When it turns direct again, its positive expansiveness is considered to be alive and well. Under normal conditions Jupiter is known as the great benefactor, but it is said that when it moves into retrograde, the energies of these characteristics seem to fade and its normal opportunistic influence is felt on an inner level. Mars Retrograde Mars traditionally is reflective of energy directed outward. During its retrograde cycle however, those affected by this transit may feel stagnated in their efforts and feel as though they had little to no energy. This is particularly true if you have a natal planet in conjunction (the most powerful aspect), square or in opposition to transiting Mars. These aspects are known as maleficent energies when associated with Mars, the planet of aggressive force and drive, although the conjunction can be released in many other ways. Much will depend on the sign and house position as well as aspect to this conjunction in the natal chart. When Mars is in its retrograde motion, the energy is turned inward, which is not a comfortable expression of Mars’ energy. You may feel that you could neither release your inner drive nor could you motivate yourself into a forward direction. You may feel a release of that energy once Mars turns direct again and what previously felt restricted or held back may now come to the forefront and be released. Make sure that the release of these energies is not in an aggressive manner, even if you have felt thwarted in the past few months. Mars can be quite forceful in its expression. If, for example, transiting Mars in retrograde was conjunction with the Moon in your chart. You could have felt as though your emotions were on hold or even though you had strong inner emotional reactions to life’s events and situations, you were not able to release those emotions. This could have included the want to make changes in your life. Your emotions were so stifled that they kept you at bay and nothing seemed to have moved in the manner you wanted. All you really wanted to do was to express how you felt on an emotion level. No Retrograde No Retrograde Planets in a Chart The energies of a planets in retrograde in an Astrology chart tend to make us look inward. Those with several retrogrades in their chart (and the magic number seems to be 5) tend to be introverted, even subdued and much to themselves. The energies have difficulties working their way to the surface and are stifled. It takes great effort to bring the energies to the surface and make the necessary adjustments to challenge these so-called deficiencies. Personally, this Astrologer does not believe in deficiencies. I tend to look at it as harnessed energy waiting for the opportune moment to be released. Those people without retrogrades in their birth charts are in the minority. It is said that roughly seven percent of people have this phenomena. It is believed that the energies of all the planets are released and given free reign and allowed to flow freely. This in turn can create an individual who may lack patience and they often avoid using a cautious approach. The waiting game is not part of their nature and they much prefer to move things along. There is usually great energy behind these individuals and they work tirelessly towards the achievements of their objectives in life. They have strong willpower and are persistent in their efforts to succeed. They move forward similar to Aries often advancing with little afterthought, if any, and they rarely disbelieve in their own abilities. As a result, they are normally quite successful. Some individuals without retrograde planets in their chart do fall from time to time; however, this will not stop them from getting back up and moving ahead again. Their determination is steadfast and they rely on no one for approval or even assistance. They believe in their own abilities and also stand behind their failures for they are valuable lessons. These lessons are not cause for alarm. “Let’s just start again and see what happens” could be their motto. “If it does not work this time, perhaps it will the next time”, or “I will just need to make some minor adjustments” would be statements you would hear from these individuals. They are self-reliant and self-determined. These traits can make them great entrepreneurs. They are willing to take the plunge and often without much reserve. Most of these individuals would prefer to work alone. This, however, can make them somewhat aloof and even distant as they unconsciously withdraw into themselves. They may even feel misinterpreted and wrongly judged by others, because of this loner type mentality. But this is only in extreme cases and it is wise to take into consideration the whole chart before coming to any conclusions. There are many things in the chart that can offset some of these characteristics, but moving forward and going it alone is quite common for someone without retrograde planets in their natal chart. Aspects in Astrology Grand Square The Grand Square (also known as the Grand Cross) is an aspect in Astrology and it involves at least four planets, two oppositions and four squares. The first and third planets will be in opposition (180 degrees) to one another, the second and fourth planets will be in opposition to each other, while the first planet squares (90 degrees) the second planet and the second plant squares the third plant and the third plant squares the fourth planet and the fourth squares the first planet involved. A strong Grand Square will have all of the four planets in the same mode (cardinal, fixed or mutable). If one or more of the planets do not fit into this criteria then it is considered a weak Grand Square. The closer the squares and oppositions are by degree to one another, the stronger the energies of the Grand Square. The Grand Square is considered a challenging aspect because of the general nature of these aspects. They often produce stress and inner tension or offer a challenge that will require inner strength and determination in order to advance through the lessons. This aspect can either become the stagnation in the lives of those under its influence or the motivating factor that has the potential of producing great strides forward. When this natal aspect becomes activated through transit or progression, the individuals with this aspect in their natal chart will feel as though they are being pulled in four directions indicated by the planets involved and the houses that the planets are found in. They may feel over-burdened and paralyzed by life’s conditions. There is usually a planet that forms a tight trine or sextile within the Grand Square and the energies and house placement of this trine or sextile will often help unlock the potentials found within the framework of this larger configuration. This contained energy resulting from the aspect needs to find a release and this trine or sextile is often where the energies are released which, if used properly, can produce great results. These individuals often need to turn inward and find their own strength. Many with this aspect feel as though they cannot rely on others to help them through life’s difficulties and therefore become stronger over time and very self-reliant. This is not to say that reaching out would be a bad idea or that no one can assist them in their time of crisis, however, many with this aspect become reliant on themselves and motivate themselves forward conquering these energies which in turn builds inner strength. Saturn Retrograde Saturn Retrograde Saturn has a 28 year cycle and remains in each zodiac sign for approximately 2 and ½ years. During its cycle, Saturn moves into retrograde on a regular basis and about 15 degrees of each astrological sign experiences the retrograde motion of Saturn. To show the contrast of the energies of a retrograde planet, we will look at Jupiter. Jupiter often brings good luck and expansion in its direct motion but when in retrograde motion as discussed in Jupiter Retrograde , its energies are similar to Saturn while it is in direct motion. Saturn’s energies in direct motion are restrictive. Its energies are challenging and can make life difficult. Saturn is known as the teacher and disciplinarian of the Zodiac. On the other hand, Saturn’s retrograde energies work similar to Jupiter’s energies when in direct motion. As a result, the extreme energies apparent with Saturn in its direct motion become somewhat softened. Saturn direct normally deals with past issues but while in retrograde, it can and will open doors to new things that somehow we may feel familiar with, even though they are new to us.
