Pluto Pluto Pluto, the powerful planet of transformation and regeneration, holds a very significant energy in any chart. It is an extremely dominant planet and when activated through progression or transit, it is best to let things happen as they will. Any type of resistance to Pluto's energy is futile. Pluto is the ruling planet of Scorpio and speaks of death and regeneration sometimes literally, but usually Pluto works beneath the surface bringing about long overdue change to life. Jupiter Retrograde When Jupiter goes into its retrograde, this cycle lasts about 120 days and will move between 10 to 20 degrees. Jupiter goes retrograde every year and as retrogrades usually indicate that the energy is not strong or its full expression is restricted, Jupiter in retrograde still offers up opportunities for expansion and optimism, although somewhat challenged when it is in touch with Saturn. You can use an orb of 3-4 degrees when determining if Jupiter will affect any of the planets or important points in your natal chart. As it crosses these placements, the energy of Jupiter will increase. When it turns direct again, its positive expansiveness is considered to be alive and well. Under normal conditions Jupiter is known as the great benefactor, but it is said that when it moves into retrograde, the energies of these characteristics seem to fade and its normal opportunistic influence is felt on an inner level. On the material side of things, however, it is less effective but still present. It is suggested that if you are considering buying property or big luxury items while Jupiter is in retrograde motion that you reconsider and wait until Jupiter is once again in direct motion. Much depends on the natal aspects to your Jupiter. In general, Jupiter’s energies are not as lucky in retrograde motion as they are under direct motion. When this planet moves into retrograde, its impact is felt on an inner level rather than in our outside world. During a retrograde cycle, you can benefit greatly if you focus on inner growth and awareness. Getting in touch with you and objectively view yourself making alterations along the way as this would be very beneficial Jupiter is the planet of expansion and is connected to spirituality and the philosophies of life that have deeper meaning. If you have a look at the house it is transiting through as well as the house it is located in your natal chart, these will be areas of life that you can do work on and transform in ways that will suit you better (when Jupiter is direct again). It is a time of introspection when Jupiter is retrograde. Remember to view Jupiter even when retrograde on a positive note, even if what you see or if your life’s direction is not what you thought it was. Under the retrograde influence you can make adjustments to the way you have been living your life, transform your life’s direction and put yourself on track with where you should be going. Jupiter in retrograde is connected to the lessons in life that are required during that specific time. Be honest with yourself under this influence, and you will be able to re-examine your truths and gauge these with a keen eye in order to decide what you want to change and what is worthy of keeping. These are often aspects of yourself that need some tweaking, in turn creating a higher version of yourself on track and ready to move in your intended direction. Look inside yourself and find those inner riches. While under the influence of Jupiter in retrograde, if you are making plans on going into a business venture, make sure that you take the time to consider all the aspects connected to making this decision. You may find that you will make great expenditures when Jupiter is retrograde. This is not always a wise decision and likely not one you would make if Jupiter were in direct motion. It is actually best to wait before making any decisions, unless your natal Jupiter and the planets connected to it in the natal chart are quite “well” aspected. Check to see what the natal chart is saying and then make your decisions. Just make sure that you are viewing these contacts with clarity and watch for expanded optimism. Once Jupiter has gone back into direct motion and is making aspects to other planets in your natal chart, you will be able to gauge what areas of life might be affected and the potential outcome of actions taken once Jupiter is direct. Jupiter is a very positive influence in your life and will enhance most experiences, especially when linked to higher forms of delivery. Mars Retrograde Mars traditionally is reflective of energy directed outward. During its retrograde cycle however, those affected by this transit may feel stagnated in their efforts and feel as though they had little to no energy. This is particularly true if you have a natal planet in conjunction (the most powerful aspect), square or in opposition to transiting Mars. These aspects are known as maleficent energies when associated with Mars, the planet of aggressive force and drive, although the conjunction can be released in many other ways. Much will depend on the sign and house position as well as aspect to this conjunction in the natal chart. When Mars is in its retrograde motion, the energy is turned inward, which is not a comfortable expression of Mars’ energy. You may feel that you could neither release your inner drive nor could you motivate yourself into a forward direction. You may feel a release of that energy once Mars turns direct again and what previously felt restricted or held back may now come to the forefront and be released. Make sure that the release of these energies is not in an aggressive manner, even if you have felt thwarted in the past few months. Mars can be quite forceful in its expression. If, for example, transiting Mars in retrograde was conjunction with the Moon in your chart. You could have felt as though your emotions were on hold or even though you had strong inner emotional reactions to life’s events and situations, you were not able to release those emotions. This could have included the want to make changes in your life. Your emotions were so stifled that they kept you at bay and nothing seemed to have moved in the manner you wanted. All you really wanted to do was to express how you felt on an emotion level. After Mars turned direct, you would have been able to express yourself which is what you wanted for what may have seemed an eternity. A further example, if Saturn had been involved in the equation with this retrograde Mars, this cycle would actually have been to your advantage as you undoubted had needed that time to examine all the details before you plunged into some activity. Most planets in retrograde suggest a time of review before moving ahead once the planet go direct again, transiting Saturn in retrograde however often works in the opposite. See our Article on “Saturn in Retrograde Motion”. Mars retrograde is a time to examine and review all details to make sure that you were prepared and on a solid foundation before you moved ahead. Saturn normally restricts action and suggests that you build a proper base before you move ahead and your drive would have been held back which gave you the perfect opportunity to prepare. Once Mars goes direct again, you may be ready to move ahead in your endeavours. Mars is also about sexual energies and sexual drive, and you may have felt as though you were stifled in this area. Perhaps you wanted to pursue a sexual union with someone you were interested in and the events never seemed to play out to allow this union to come together. You may find that once Mars goes direct that things move along in ways that were previously stagnated or held back. Just make sure that your feelings go beyond just a sexual nature. Mars tends to be overly aggressive when it comes to sex and the sexual drive, especially when it moves through Scorpio. Check to see which house transiting Mars is moving through as this will indicate the areas of life involved in the process. Also you will need to review which houses are involved with other planetary energies and how they may surface or fail to surface during the retrograde cycle and again when Mars goes direct. The placement of natal Mars by house position will also be highlighted. Transiting Mars may pass over planets or significant areas of the natal chart (ascendant and midheaven) three times as it goes through the retrograde and direct cycles making these areas of extreme importance in your life at that time. The Planets The Planets The Birth or Natal chart is a snapshot of the heavens at the instant of your birth. It is a diagram of the precise planetary placements which is reflective of you and a roadmap of your potential and lessons possible in life. Each planet represents a quality linked directly to you (a character trait if you will) that differentiates between each and every individual. There are no two charts that are precisely the same. Even when someone is born in the same year, on the same day and at the same moment, their location of birth will differ. As a result, the overall personal characteristics change. How much of a change depending on the distance between their birth places. The planets fall into houses . There are twelve in all, circling the horoscope. Each house is significant as they represent an area of your life’s focus. The planets located within these houses will have an impact in that area of life. With several planets located in a particular house, there will be an emphasis in that area of life. At that instant at birth, the planets are frozen in time to create the reflection of you. This is your Natal Chart and the location of the plants will never move for this chart. Once the Natal or Birth Chart snapshot has been taken, the planets continue to move around the chart. The planet's energy will be in the area of life dictated by the house it is located in and will be influenced by the astrological sign it is under in your individual chart. No Retrograde No Retrograde Planets in a Chart The energies of a planets in retrograde in an Astrology chart tend to make us look inward. Those with several retrogrades in their chart (and the magic number seems to be 5) tend to be introverted, even subdued and much to themselves. The energies have difficulties working their way to the surface and are stifled. It takes great effort to bring the energies to the surface and make the necessary adjustments to challenge these so-called deficiencies. Personally, this Astrologer does not believe in deficiencies. I tend to look at it as harnessed energy waiting for the opportune moment to be released. Those people without retrogrades in their birth charts are in the minority. It is said that roughly seven percent of people have this phenomena. It is believed that the energies of all the planets are released and given free reign and allowed to flow freely. This in turn can create an individual who may lack patience and they often avoid using a cautious approach. The waiting game is not part of their nature and they much prefer to move things along. There is usually great energy behind these individuals and they work tirelessly towards the achievements of their objectives in life. They have strong willpower and are persistent in their efforts to succeed. They move forward similar to Aries often advancing with little afterthought, if any, and they rarely disbelieve in their own abilities. As a result, they are normally quite successful. Some individuals without retrograde planets in their chart do fall from time to time; however, this will not stop them from getting back up and moving ahead again. Their determination is steadfast and they rely on no one for approval or even assistance. They believe in their own abilities and also stand behind their failures for they are valuable lessons. These lessons are not cause for alarm. “Let’s just start again and see what happens” could be their motto. “If it does not work this time, perhaps it will the next time”, or “I will just need to make some minor adjustments” would be statements you would hear from these individuals. They are self-reliant and self-determined. These traits can make them great entrepreneurs. They are willing to take the plunge and often without much reserve. Most of these individuals would prefer to work alone. This, however, can make them somewhat aloof and even distant as they unconsciously withdraw into themselves. They may even feel misinterpreted and wrongly judged by others, because of this loner type mentality. But this is only in extreme cases and it is wise to take into consideration the whole chart before coming to any conclusions. There are many things in the chart that can offset some of these characteristics, but moving forward and going it alone is quite common for someone without retrograde planets in their natal chart. Mars Mars Locate Mars in your natal chart, and through its sign placement and house placement, you will begin to understand how your energy is activated. Mars is the planet of dynamism and action and instigates activity in your life. Mars specifically deals with the energy that it takes to deal with pressures in your life. Mars can be an aggressive force and when provoked will ignite the urge to fight and stand up for what you feel is your right. Mars is linked to masculine figures in our life, while Venus is linked to female figures in our life. Venus , among other things, represents young women; while Mars, among other things, represents young men. Mars is strongly connected to our sexual drive and ambitions in life. Life moves us along with or without our approval. We juggle our objectives and set courses for the road ahead without really knowing where that road might take us. Our objectives are likely feasible and attainable, yet it is okay to reach for higher goals as the higher we aim the higher we can reach. You may question what is the purpose for striving to achieve or to pushi ahead in life. After all, life is uncertain. It is human nature to need goals and objectives to strive for as it gives us tangible purpose. We learn perseverance in dealing with the different climates life presents us with and need to be adaptable as we coming to terms with where life is taking us. We find solace in those that provide support and tell us to hang on. We maneuver our way forward and we learn to listen to the advice of our inner voice and those who care about us. We will learn to walk with our heads high through difficulties and we gain immensely through adversity.
